As ive posted in another thread i got laid off today, ive been threatening to go on my own for a while now, So ive figured i may aswell try and give it ago until employment comes up, Who knows maybe ill earn enough so i wont need employment but as ill be sat on my arse for the foreseable, I may aswell give it ago, Im not the type to dwell on things, id rather look on the positive side!!

Im just wondering how to get the ball rolling?? How do you guys advertise yourselves??

I know times are hard but its worth ago and im not after world domination, Just a few quid to tide me over.

Any advise would be great!!

Waht are you looking for? I understood you were a groundie? If your looking to find work as that then you need other tree companies to work for so look in YP.

If your settign up a tree business then thats different.

I wouldnt say setting up a business just yet Rupe, As in, If employment comes up in the mean time ill probably take it, Although i would really like to go on my own.

Yes, i am a groundie, A good one but i can climb, i just know my limits when it comes to mature trees but i do know a few climbers round this way that could help me and a mate of mine has his own van and chipper and is a good climber he also said he'd gladly give me a lift as and when id need him

hard work and honesty is the best advert you could ever get. if you aim for a few quid that is all you will get, aim high and you will get there. call nfu, get insurance, get a pick up/van/trailer sign write it and start spreading the word you are looking for business. work weekends, work nights. speak to the bank and open an account, they will give you 1 years free banking and a cheque book. dont make up some fancy arby catchy name, use your own name and be proud of it, just seeing your name on the vehicle will give you motivation and inspiration to work hard. if you have been a groundy for 10 years you should know the job inside out by now. go for it. you are only 28.

Avoid anything to do with Yell like the plague. Expensive and utterly shite.

You won't be doing big jobs, so advertise in Parish mags, local shop windows and garden centres etc. No point spending mega bucks on advertising at this stage.

Good luck with it mate.

MAybe if you and your mates are cheap enough you could put another firm out of business and cause more unemployment.

Sorry, nothing personal meant by that, bit of a rant, but it is possible your boss laid you off cos there are too many "mates" doing cheap work and not enough work to go round as it is.

Of course the market dictates what happens and how much clients will pay and these days everyone wants a bargain.

Good luck in your venture, don't take my first comment to heart.
