Just had to quote for felling of 10 or 12 medium nasty sycamore with 3 hefty ones in the mix . Woodland edge trees so mostly strait up , not too much brash but on the big side . Problem is to do with the horses that graze below . Atypical Myopathy . A muscle degenerating thing caused by horses eating the seed . Any one else had this call ?

be polite and speak to the owner of the horses, be firm in asking them to keep them away with some sort of fencing.

No no its their land , their trees and their horses and hopefully it will be our money ! Just wondered if any one else has had a similar request . We have a horse and a pony and had never heard of it untill now .

I went to quote for 12 sycamores around a horse field at a livery yard last week. It seems to be more in the horsey media this year as a couple of horses have died from apparently eating the seeds.

I think the owner of the yard will just fence off the edge of the field rather than spend the money but fingers crossed.

Yes! I am from Agri Equine background and am well acquainted with Atypical Myopathy, and due to my equine connections get quite a bit of preventative work, Funny old world Spent a fortune diagnosing it years ago… make a fortune from it now:001_tongue:

We keep horses and they are in fields with oak , conifer and sycamore all of which can poison a horse but we have never lost one. All the time there is plenty of grass I dont think you have a problem , its when they start foraging they start on things that will kill them.

I got called out to look at some seedlings in my niece's paddock, lots of sycamore with the cotyledon leaves showing. She's in a panic now but as far as I can see from googling it's the seeds that are the problem but what about the seedlings?

I cannot see what to advise apart from regular close mowing with a collector mower. The fields are pretty horse sick with very short sward but that's typical overstocking round here.
