I've been a single father for the best part of two and a half years now. My daughter is almost 4. I've always had my daughter stay 5 out of 7 days a week. My parents have been great in looking after her from 7ish but I've always tried to be back by 5 as i realise that as they're getting older looking after a toddler can be knackering! I've explained to customers that sometimes Zara will have to come with me pricing and they've been fine with it. I also add an extra set of hands so we can finish early. Yes I lose a bit of money that way but I choose this way cos I have be at home for her to cook tea, bedtime etc. she's an absolute joy and I wouldn't have it any other way :)

I'm about to become a father, in about 8 days or so actually, and as the son of a single father who worked his arse off my whole life, I have this deep rooted fear of turning round and finding out my kid is suddenly 16 / 18 years old and I've been too busy with work to spend any time with them.

This reminds me ofbeing a kid- when iwas a baby my dad delivered wine with me in a carry cot on a purpose built shelf in the back(you probably wouldnt get away with that now), whhen i was 4 he had me carrying the single bottles!!

When i was 6 i learned how to drive a digger laying pipes out in a field, when i was about 13 i had a day off school for a removal job, when i was 14 my dad picked me up from schoool and took me to a job to lay out slabs and bricks ready for laying the nextday, i was on that job every evening till about 9pm for about 6 weeks! I loved it all!

This thread has been a great reminder to me to practice what I preach!

In the last 2 years I've been working 7 days a week maybe not full days but prioritising it!

So today I took the day off, walked the kids to school and walked the dogs and took my wife out for breakfast!

:)

I spend Mondays at home with my boy, Tuesdays and Wednesdays I drop him off at nursery at 07:30 and pick him up at 15:30. Thursdays just drop him off, his mother picks him up and Fridays he's at home with mum so I work a full day.

Works well, never say how long a job will take, if they ask what time I'll be there I'll say 8:30/9:00 as dropping him off at nursery.

Everyone understands. Even other contractors I sub to work around my timetable

So far it's working well
