Agreed. How many people put a headache at the end of the day down to the sun/heat when its actually fumes.

Ever so many have, and still do think the headaches are down to the heat, physical exertion and noise.

No doubt these influences do factor in, but undoubtedly the main cause are the toxic exhaust fumes from pump petrol.

The absence of headaches and nausea, higher energy levels, better breathing and cleaner smelling clothes when using Aspen are priceless, and of course the machines work better and last longer too.

In short, if you can afford it, then buy it. Few users are going to use 5 litres a day and even if they do, its only going to cost £10 a day more. Easy to budget into a well run business plan.

I still think it's very expensive.

But continuing with the positive outlook on a lot of the comments in this thread; I'm still very happy to do as much work as possible with hand tools.... it's much healthier than burning Aspen! Haha! :001_huh: cheers, steve

Well yes it is expensive, but what price your health, especially long term, hand tools are fine..to a point, then the saws have to come out, & hedges...well I rest my case! :001_tt2::biggrin:

Not including postage or trip/s to your local shop to pick up enough 2-stroke oil to make 25Ltrs. of premix; and if you only use the standard red Stihl not HP Super or HP Ultra or Husky LS, you can add at least 8.2p per litre of premixed fuel.

Add to that saw manufacturers recommend a 98 octane fuel for mixing and considering the national average price for 98' at the pumps at the moment, is 138.86p per litre. Now add 8.2p of oil per litre and an average litre of premix is 147.06p x 25 = £36.765.

Oil price derived from price of red Stihl 10L £41.00inc. VAT but not del. from FR Jones on 21.06.14.

For a truer final cost for normal premix. You'd have to factor in how much fuel your vehicle would use to and fro the petrol station to collect 25Ltrs. of fuel; and add the general running costs by vehicle per mile; and add your hourly pay rate to collect 25Ltrs. of petrol; and add your hourly pay rate to mix five times 5Ltrs.; and maybe add the extra hourly pay rate for having to shake your premix combi can at the start of each day.

Compare all that to making a phone call, having Aspen2 delivered to your door, knowing the stuff will remain stable for the duration and not having to worry about an inattentive groundie getting the wrong premix ratio. Now consider both the health & environmental benefits of using Aspen fuels... and the deal doesn't seem that bad.

Interesting number crunching but it completely ignores the facts that

My 2 stroke oil arrives delivered FREE along with all the other stuff I order on a regular basis, I don't even have to make a call for that, its all clickety click click and only one delivery:thumbup1:

I visit fuel stations with a practically unlimited supply on a regular basis (unfortunately:001_rolleyes:) and filling a couple of combi cans takes less time than the costa machine needs to make a latte. If I did keep a bulk supply of fuel at the yard it would still take the same time to fill a can at the yard, without the benefit of the caffeine:thumbdown:.

If your groundie cant be trusted to manage a can of 2 stroke,,,, you need a new groundie:laugh1:

But that's OK, I fully understand the tendency to defend the choices we make.

If I had hedge cutters I would run them on alkylate fuel.

I appreciate the effort going in to the number crunching but if the issue is cost than the answer is simply: aspen is much more expensive, and no amount of calculating seconds/day spent more or less etc will change that.

It isn't just about cost though and that is why (for me) cost is acceptable. I run all my saws on Aspen, from ms180 to ms880.

Just as a fun fact to ponder: in the Netherlands an employer that requires an employee to use 2-stroke machinery must run it on aspen/motomix/other alkylate fuel, as exposing your employees to the amount of toxins found in pump petrol whilst there are (much) less harmful alternatives contravenes h&s laws.

Its more like ppe, about protecting yourself and your employees from harm where it is possible to do so.

Do you use a saw in shorts because they are cheaper then stretch airs?

God forbid more regulation, BUT, if it were the case demand would increase and more players would get into the market making finding it easier and driving the price towards the reasonable.

What's the price difference in the low countries?

Maybe in your case Treequip, the coatings do not add up. The figures I produced were correct for generalisation. So some aspects and or benefits may not apply in a given situation, (such as your) but are worth a ponder.

Hi,

Have you signed up to get the Road Tax off Aspen?

This would make it 58p per litre cheaper for everyone!
