Hi all, was wondering what some of your views are on the stihl ms 261?

I brought one last year as I have to provide own saws for the company I work for, it ran ok untill 3 weeks ago, a clip on the clutch came off clattered the worm gear and sheered the sprocket on the clutch clean off!

It's all fixed for now but I know a lot of people have had problems with these saws relating to the same issue??

Anyone else had anything similar?

I serviced two recently with exactly the same fault. The needle bearing fails and the excessive play does the damage.

I'm not saying Stihl is the only one in the club but they have rather excelled at the 'Microsoft' release method.

Manager: When is the new model going to be ready for rollout?

Engineer: Well there are still major issues, the software won't be debugged for another 8mths. and 'that problem' is still unsolved. I can't yet give a realistic date.

Manager: Good. Good. So we're still on for the big release next week.

The recommended fix to try for premature bearing failure is change the rim sprocket supplied as standard for a spur sprocket. New MS260 saws that Stihl are now sending out have been changed before despatch

I did that and its still no good.
