I wouldn't mill beams - they are more likely to crack and less likely to be useful for anything. I suggest it is big enough to justify quarter sawing if the mill are prepared to do it. I would go for a reasonable amount of 1.5", a bit of 1" (which will finish to around 0.75" for shelves, bookcase sides and smaller furniture), a few bits of 2.5" which will finish to 2" for a serious table if you fancy it, and when it gets near the corners of the log, mill a few bits of 4" square for use as table legs.

There will be a lot of timber there - for context, if you took it all down to 1.5" you would have about 400sq.ft, so you might want to thing of a range of projects and make sure you get the timber milled to start. Also don't forget you will need to get a lot of stickers ready in advance.

Love it, Very Funny.. and I all have to tell all my mate down the pub.. they told me it could have a big value .. I always wanted to use the wood my self now I will..

cheers all..!

Yep - it will be in the hundreds value wise... if it was the best colour, tiny sapwood and no shake then possibly max £500-00.... but that's around a 1 in every 500 tree.

But with walnut there are plenty of people everywhere that will tell you 'it's worth a fortune!' - quite simply unless you had a 100% burr or heavily rippled or similar it won't be worth thousands £.

Post some pics up as you come to mill it!

Brilliant to slab then build on the spot - yet to have been able to do that myself yet.

Don't they use walnut rootfor gunstocks?

Is there a market there?

Many years ago I was contracted to dismantle 2 walnut trees specifically for timber , the specification was all main sections of stem in to 6 foot lengths, anything from which to get a 5"x 2" x 18" blank for gun stocks to be kept , but most importantly the stump to be left 18 " high and to be dug out with JCB , this bottom section I was told was the most valuable for gun stocks . The customer had a receipt from approx 100 years ago for the supply and planting of the 2 trees , which we calculated ,allowing for inflation to be the equivilent of 1 weeks pay .End of day we were all quite happy !
