Could anyone tell me where a good comp would be for me? Iv climbed for 10 years but never ever comps, what's a good beginner one? Also I'm sooo crap with a throw bag, any comps with no throwbags? Haha

Even in the throw line event in the isa there are usually a couple of low targets you could throw a rope straight over.

I think a pretty important thing to remember is that these comps aren't actually about winning, because lets face it with some of the climbers cutting about these days that's pretty unlikely. Just watching those guys climb you can learn something though, and who honestly couldn't benefit from spending an hour or two at the aerial rescue tree seeing all the ways people do and don't manage to get a casualty down in time? It's those little things that matter in a real emergency.

I hear all these chaps saying they'll be damned if they're going to climb for free, but if you actually enjoy working as a tree climber (as I suspect most, if not all do) then taking a weekend out once a year to climb some trees, pick up a trick or two, have a party and talk bollocks about trees isn't that big a deal is it?

There were 80 competitors alone at last years German ISA TCC. Pretty amazing there was such a low UK turn out, but then the venue changes, clashing dates etc. definitely wouldn't help... Better next year perhaps?

I think we did 63 a few years ago at Guilford and when we did the 4 comps a year there was well 80 climbers attending the different events in total, but things change

To be fair, 63 competitors would be a nightmare to get through over the course of the 2 days anyway wouldn't it!!?

You can tailor the events to suit a bigger field, but it is hard work yes.

I have only entered the one isa comp up in Bedfordshire a few years back and had a good time despite getting my throw line stuck and having to go up at the end of the day to get it down and de-rig the tree. Was great to meet people and seeing plenty of techniques and realising the aerial rescue was harder than I thought, key thing is to have a good plan. Throughout the year I tend to prefer entering the pole climbing as it's a bit more relaxed and it's not just one shot and that's it, especially with three climbs a day. I know the two aren't really comparable but we tend to get quite a good turnout 20+ at some shows. I have had busy weekends on the past couple isa shows which was annoying as the highclere one was just up the road but would have entered if I could go with some mates. I think I would really be up for volunteering though if there is ever a need for such help.

Yep, 80 was pretty horrendous and I think they limited it to 65 this year, but it was a great laugh...
