Hiya,

Might have a job to remove some unwanted pampas grass, what is the best way to do it? Apparently burning just makes it come back thicker!?

Dig it out. Dig round it then stab away under it. A mini digger would be good and i have stabbed fork tines on a front loader in and flicked one out. They are a pig to do, but you only need to get the base of the plants out, not all the roots that tiller away from it.

Do not chop down to ground level with a chainsaw. It will blunt and clog up. Use a blade on a strimmer/brushcutter.

Levers and bars may be helpful too.

Thats my experience anyway

Cheers mate! I was thinking of digging around it and then winching it out, then digging any remaining visible roots. No way I'm putting a saw near the dirt, had a job lastweek removing a massive root ball that had to be cut to move so I've had enough of blunt chains!

Yes that's the idea you can dig quite tight to the circumference of the Base crown. Expect to go 30-45cm down as I remember. Another good tool a flat pickaxe mattock type head to penetrate and hack through. It also makes a a nice narrow trench around it.

Also required is a positive mindset. I've seen a few give up.

I use the hedge cutter to remove the top and stump grind the base.

Take care when chipping the top, it can easily block a chipper, best to mix some timber in with it.

put a ton bag over it, tie it off at the base the tightest you can, cut in with a hedge cutter , flip it over.

And it's in the bag!

Dig out with a round mouth spade like a chocolate orange segment type way.

Throw it all in the bag and burn at a later date, I personally wouldn't put it near my chipper due to doing it once before , even mixing stuff in lol.

Or rip them out in oners with a hiab and stick in the trailer, once filled a 10 ton cylage trailer with 2!!

Burn at a later date :)

Ive dug a good trench round the clump to get a sling around the root and pulled the lot out with my truck in low range fwd.

As long as theres no gas, electric or water under there of course.
