Logsplitter advice please

Buy a quality european model. Or buy the splitter and mount it on a cheap trailer. I have found a contact for bell housing a hyd pump on to honda engines. I cant remember ever buying a chinese product I was happy with ( apart from the paper umbrella you put in a cocktail they are good at those )

managed to find a suitable splitter for my needs - a Thor 37MVS10PD, 13 ton, road towable, B&S petrol engine, perfect for splitting big timber into billets

 

This looks like the tool you need especially if you need to do longish timber into billets.

One of the best splitters i have seen for splitting large logs was at the Elmia show this year. It was basically a screw splitter mounted on a 360 digger. You can see one on the cbi website (continental biomass industries) i think there's a link on to a youtube video. Very simple idea but not sure how much they are.

How much of your hard earned cash does it take to own a thor tow behind.

Im very tempted by the flood of cheap chinese copies on ebay and elsewhere but in abit doubtful on their reliability and backup.

 

Look at paying around £3500 plus VAT

We have been splitting 1 metre long logs up to 22" diameter, slices through any knots, twin speed for quick splitting of easy timber, great machine

I see that, looks like he has cut that across the grain. Does not look practical lifting wood above your head. I bet you would get a head ache if you hit a knot.

hi, just joined the site, so if i make a mess of things, someone let me know.

just setting myself up, as i've just been made redundant from a large utility tree firm. spent all my hard earned on the van n chipper but i'm getting swamped with logs. cut the easy ones with a splitting maul but struggling with the gnarly ones. just spotted a splitting cone on ebay for £60, just needs a motor attaching and a table making. i know a tame fitter who can make me a table for nowt, but does anyone know what sort of speed the cone needs to turn.

been on hycracks website and your looking at about £1300 for a 240v table model.

Hi dave, the cones usually rotate at 540rpm, but I would'nt advise using them on knarly knotty logs. easy way to break your fingers. Which utility firm were you wroking for?

hi mr ed. did a few years on the railway with h w martin, then moved to freedom. crap work but decent money when you got the right jobs and right team. not paid for neatness or technicality, just mileage.

Hi New To The Site, We Have A Ballerio Road Towable 13 Tonne Portable Log Splitter Owned For Nearly 3 Years Has Robin (Subaru) Engine Gets Used At Least 3-4 Days Per Week For At Least 3hrs A Time All We Do Is Change Engine Oil Regularly, Very Good On Fuel, Has 2 Speed System And Can Cut Billets, Not Used Other Models Mentioned But Can Recommend This One. Have The Cone Type That Runs On PTO This Is Good Until You Hit A Knotty Piece Of Wood Then Jams And Is A Pain To Unblock.
