It's madness people ripped out back boilers 10 years ago and yet were all considering going back!!!!

Just saw a solid fuel aga on gumtree and considering it for the kitchen & hot water!!!

Heating oil prices r ridiculous!!!!

Your probably right about the efficiency but comparing the cost of oil to all the free wood we get then it works out a lot cheaper in a lifetime!!!!

It also saves on cooking costs as the aga would always be on and my electric cooker won't!!!

In my opinion as a plumber woodburners with back boilers are an inefficient way of heating, a solid fuel appliance with a constant cold spot ( back boiler) will reduce efficiency compare to just a room heater, also the c/h system will have to be old fashion (open vented) I would steer clear personally!

But ... is there a constant cold spot? I've heard this argument before and it always puzzles me. My hot water is rarely cold! Actually, it is probably mostly at a higher temperature than the air that surrounds the rest of the solid fuel appliance.

If you have oil CH/DHW and are considering wood for your DHW then fitting an aga will need some changes to the existing plumbing.you will either have to mix the water from the two sources with an equalizer or use swept or injection Tee's or keep them separate with a twin coil tank and motorized valves.

I designed and plumbed my own system 35 years ago using a Stanley 90 cooker / boiler in the kitchen and a trianco 25kw oil boiler in an outhouse.

with a twin coil tank.

Each heat source work together or independently .

The constant cold spot is inside your woodburner where the boiler is and the stove becomes inefficient at being a room heater, the dunsley neutraliser and injector tee is like you said 35 year old technology, poor water pressure and unbalanced hot and colds, I'm my opinion as a plumbing and heating engineer
