Never stop learning, listening and gaining experience through others. 32 years at the coal face and still learning everyday.

I've been refused jobs that I've applied for because the people interviewing thought I was too qualified, or too experienced didn't stop me from continuing my Personal Development.

These days I spend more time, money and effort on my sons and trying to get them sorted career wise. Youngest just done his Irata level one and good enough he passed so now using my knowledge and experience to help him develop his application and cv.

I think CPD is very important in last 12 months I have completed level 4 diploma, pti, pest and disease day and barchams, Training in decay detection, as well as doing tree planting and VTA voluntarily for Trees for Cities, for this year more tree planting with trees for cities and hopefully going to Ancient Tree Forum meet in Wales in April and then see Claus Mattheck do a lecture in May.

Since getting the consultancy position, i've found my CPD to be brought to the forefront and important for career progression. The company i'm at actively encourage us to develop and record out CPD. The aim at the end of two years is to become Chartered (MICFor) hopefully.

Since July last year I have, through work:

Spent all 3 days at the AA conference in Exeter;

Received training in AutoCAD;

Been on a number of VTA training days through work; and

currently studying to sit my Field Identification Skills Certificate, so i can do phase 1 habitat surveys.

In my own time since July (and previous):

I have attended a number of AA and ATF run day sessions, shows and presentations

I find it harder being in the north as a lot of courses and presentations are population led (i.e. in the south), but i try not to let it stop me where time and money allow :biggrin:

Hope to do a lot more in the coming months

The bog !

Should be pride & place on your desk man :biggrin:

How did you find the BB course, was it the Flora Locale one with David?

Shame you had to endure the tedious speakers at the LTOA seminar, hopefully they haven't put you off the subject too much :lol:

:biggrin:

Yes the BB one was Dave. I had the Vet tree book in my bag and was half tempted to get him to sign it but got prang that I might look too keen! It was a good day.

The LTOA day had a poor lunch; there was no Indian or even Thai buffet. Not even a splattering of chicken jalfezi, no bombay potatos or anything. Ancient trees look dangerous, should probably have them all out, to be safe.

I'm in my final year of my FDSc in arb. I'm probably going to defer the top-up years so that I can focus on work. For the time being, CPD and general academic advancement is on hold while I decide if consultancy is an avenue I am likely to persue, or if I am going to try and take my life down a business ownership/expansion route.

I would love to attend the odd conference, but being on the IOW gives me that additional leg of travel which makes it a complete pain in the bum. Nothing ever comes over here though! No courses, demos, talks, inspections.... Its a shame, there are a lot of business' with a lot of potential which are stuck in the stone age. I know this is the same elsewhere, but the access to information is much less available over here!

Spent all 3 days at the AA conference in Exeter;

quite an expenditure from your employers, but one no doubt that they expect will pay them dividens in the long term in terms of your development.

If you had the choice (perhaps you did?), would you have spent all three days at conference Rob?

I've been to a few of them but not been able to justify the time or expense to attend all three days.

Find myself tuning into & booking the day(s) that most suit my interests
