A mate of mine had a similar thing with a stihl dealer in Esher, he took in his stihl hedge trimmer because it would not idle, got it back in a cardboard box.

Beyond economical repair "would you like to buy a new one?"

They had fully stripped it as far as it would go including the carb.

I put it back together for him and it ran well, I do think they try it on sometimes.

Sell a new one and keep the bit to reassemble at a later date.

That's pretty much what happened here, the bloke was trying to sell me new saws before I even got a look at the

original ones.

There wasn't really anything wrong with them, just couldn't get them to idle quite right. Needless to say I won't be using him again.

Thats such bad service.... stop using him and eventually he'll go out of business and make way for a proper service agent.....

+1, :thumbup1:

If trying to sell new saws is more important than fixing old ones then I'm staying as I am and not going to even think about selling new stuff.

I have seen how stihl work and put pressure on dealers to sell sell sell. It can ruin a small business in months. I did look into it a short while ago. But I'm staying as I am.

He will soon lose business as word of mouth is more important than any form of advertising.

Before slagging the dealer off too much it might be as well to wait and see what 'the pom on the hill' has to say.

Maybe the local dealer made the right call and to save further costs left them in bits.

I have done this in the past and have then had the customer grumbling because even though he accepts the diagnosis he still wants the saw back in the condition it was brought in (intact but not running) so he can put it on Ebay.

I would agree, we only have one side of the story, " couldn't get them to idle quite right" could mean scored pistons or low bottom end compression. The dealer may be honest and genuinely thought they were not worth repairing, especailly if they are bound to use OE parts.

Not saying Eco is not right either, but we are all presuming the dealer is an arse
