is sweet chestnut any good for burning

Just about to purchase 40 acre's clear fell off sweet chestnut. Does anyone know whether it is any good for burning and whether it will sell on the commercial market and what prices it can fetch ad roadside.

all I know is its a great burner, in a log burner, as it spits a lot.

not much info, sorry, but I am sure someone will buy it. good luck

my log shed has chestnut posts, they last for ever. so if firewood is not an option there are plenty of other uses.

Watched a grand designs where a charcoal maker built a house in the middle if the woods because he needs to monitor the burning to make charcoal from sweet chestnut.

As it does not get planted this far north we've only had a small amount come our way, but it made very good firewood! was much like oak.

Awful firewood, but if it helps you out, I'll take it all for free if you can get it to roadside. I just like to help other Arbtalkers out like that!

I'm sure it will sell. I burn a bit of sweet chestnut in the stove alongside whatever else I have. It's ok.

I would have thought you'd get interest if it was any good for the fencing teams.

Nothing beats a nice split chestnut fence.

Yeah watch the Ben law episode of grand designs he is completely reliant on sweet chestnut for his entire build and lively hood.

I have just finished burning a large amount , don't think I will bother with it again, you need to turn the stove up to get good heat , then it burns too fast and when you open the door it spits out, quite violent at times.

Spits too much really for open fires even when seasoned - but good for woodburners. Burns well at high temperatures.

 

Used in traditional charcoal and also the iron industries of Kent and Sussex grew up in part because of chestnut. That was the beginning of many chestnut coppicing operations. Straight lengths are still valued round here for fencing products and firewood.
