At GreenMech, we regularly fit an electric one to tracked machines and we have also fitted hydraulic units in the past.

We commonly use a 9000lb unit. They are fitted more to aid recovery as a thermo switch is fitted so that the winch motor cannot be overheated from repetitive use. If you are half-way through a pull and the winch stops to cool down, that could be tricky!!!

Some of Vermeer's wood chippers can come with a winch attachment which many operators find very useful see a video below:

It's is a Vermeer specific winch though

Cheers

On the electric winch front its a good idea to have an isolation switch on the feed. I was gifted one of the PRC made "electric clothes line" type winches which I fitted to my chipper.

It was great for pulling trees over and allowed safety while being "adventurous" on slopes.

It shorted out in use and without the isolator could have become a bonfire under the chipper.

When I fit another it will be hydraulic.

I like that idea .. I'm guessing it would be relatively easy to plumb in to the chipper hydraulics ?

Here you go Hodge . I only connect my winch to the battery when using it via big spring loaded clips . Not finished yet still got to fit the frame to hold the winch cable . Not the best place for it but as I only intended using the winch to pull the chipper to the van it has been a blessing so far. Also the added weight of the winch helps crush the brash .
