Nice try @spudulike - thanks but it's not those.  I've run the saw up and all seems well so I'll keep the pin safe and wait for the bang.

The cases haven't been split have they? It may be a crankcase locating dowel.

Great for first thinning scots pine but a bit slow for knotting out hardwood.
