Hi all, just looking for some advice really. At the moment, im getting bits of tree and hedgework comming in, im also been asked to do turfing, grass cutting, clearence type work, drive way washing, vegetation clearence and that sort of thing.

 

For any of you that do this type of work, do you work it by an hourly rate or by price. What do you think works best.

All of our turf laying work is based on a price per metre and that price depends on how big/small the job is and how much prep work

for example what would you price a 10x10 garden, remove turf and take away, and re turf. thanks

Are you finding work quiete or are you fairly flat out

I normally put prices in for larger jobs where the bills will be higher. Then the customer knows what it's going cost. Small jobs like the ones your getting asked to do I do on an hourly rate. Speak to a few people locally to you and find out what a good fair day rate and hourly rate is for you.

Hourly rate jobs will pay the wages....priced jobs will produce bigger profits or bigger loss's depending on how experienced you are.

I would always charge by the job but have the experience to know what will make a profit and what will not. Grass cutting with your own equipment you would be mad to charge hourly rate but with customers equipment it is probably fair enough. If you don't think you have the experience to price jobs correctly then an hourly rate will at least prevent you working for a loss but no opportunity for working harder and getting job finished for a better profit!

headgroundsman, thats what i thought, I guess with an hourly rate, you are very limited on earning a decent wage.

pluss on bigger jobs people want to know what its going to cost so get put off by hourly rates
