Syndicate Woodlands

Recommended Posts

Just wondered if anyone would be interested in a woodland syndicate. With wood getting scarce it makes sense to have your own supply but economies of scale dictate purchase of hundreds of acres rather than small woodlots. In the renewable sector it is quite common for crowd funding to get projects off the ground just wondered whether the same technique could be applied to woodland. Must be a lot of pitfalls otherwise everybody would be doing it.

Log suppliers are not generally known for getting on with the competition. Wood is expensive to move, so it stands to reason that people would have to be localish. Conflicts of interest etc. Some will be better at selling than others.

Timber costs what it costs- there is a market value to it. I don't see that you would be saving money by owning the wood- making money, yes, when you sell the timber or log it and sell.

You are able to have your cake and eat it (very rare in business), i.e. You harvest and sell timber, but sill own the woodland, which can be sold at any time to recoup your initial investment!!

That's a fair point, the increase in land value should make up for the drop in value from harvesting the trees if you get it right.

Depending on how you elect to pay tax timber sales can be tax free.

This quirk of the taxation system is how the big management companies grew.
