Kats need to run hot in order to work. They impede the flow of exhaust gas a little, which results in a power loss.

A little googling reveals that the pre Kat model produced 1.7hp. whereas the Kat model has lost a little power through the Kat and only produces 1.6hp.

I have always prefered to sell the 180 and then the 181 models, they have a 1.3 bar and a little more power (1.8hp)for very little more money.

Am I right in thinking the new 170 is a china made saw? I was after buying one from my dealer, as the last one I had was bombproof, (I gave in away to a relative), & was advised against.

Catalytic converters run at 600° to 1000°C. They must be a pretty robust type of catalyst in a chainsaw because usually oil burning in an engine can destroy the converter or stop it functioning.

Slight de rail but I thinks kats are a load of crap in any engine . As I understand it they cause more pollution in their manufacture than they prevent when in use plus they impair the efficiency of any engine .
