Axe or maul, what's your weapon of choice?

This isn't a thread about what make of axe are better or anything like that, I'm just curious as to what people prefer to split with and their reason for the preference?

 

Personally I prefer splitting with an axe. Just have a roughneck axe and everything I split is at max 10" thick but could be any size around. I find that swinging a heavy maul is just more effort for less output and to be honest, most of the time what I can't split with the axe usually isn't worth splitting but that just my personal thoughts

A very sharp Axe for me unless I am using a "wood grenade", mind you a sledge is then the prefered weapon of coice.

Axe - I don't do enough, regularly enough, to build the physique for a maul. I can swing one for a few hours, but the axe is less tiring. But I keep a maul handy for twisty stuff.

Cleaving axe for me. Light enough to use one handed, heavy enough to get the job done. Great for beating wedges into trees too

i use a fiskas the dogs do das and we split a lot of wood by hand but if knotty prefer a hydrolic splitter but its broken at moment
