double cab or single cab pickup?

Before I start, I apologise as this has probably been said 1000 times before but I couldn't find anything specific to my circumstances.

I'm looking in to my first truck (only 20) so need something I can use for both work and personal use hence a pick up truck.

My question is... which do people prefer, a double cab and the instant ability to be able to store kit away in the back seats securely and live with the loss of space or.....

buy a single cab pickup with more space in the back and then have to weld up some sort of a box in the back so that you can still get to the tools if the truck is full with chip etc? a bit like this

Also..... I'm based near Plymouth and currently on the market there is a 11 yr old double cab hilux with 97,000 miles at Bristol for £4,995 or a 55 plate double cab ford ranger on 130,000 miles for £3,500 in Exeter.... is that a good deal and or which one shall I go for?!

cheers

I agree with the above but like you I struggled to find an extra cab locally and within my budget, there always seems to be an extra premium on them :/, went for a double cab rodeo in the end and so far I'm very pleased :)

hmmm been having a look at extra cabs and they seem to only be available in the very newer hilux version whilst I can only afford around the 2002-2005 version.

And if that is the case gensetsteve than it looks like I shall be looking into a double cab hilux! I quite like the price of a double cab ranger and the're are quite a few of them around here but everyone says a hilux is what I need!cheers

double cabs ok but leg room in back is limited i have got in back of mine and its a job as such and not much leg room but you can take 4 people and still a good spacein back. if it was me would go for hilux bomb proof can be expensive on bits from dealers but can get most bits for any truck from auto factors or scrapyards if you see a d22 navara and a yd25 engine unless engine has been changed stear a wide berth if it has been changed then a good truck. but its only the yd25 engine thats the problem
