My wife just did hand to hand combat with a rat.

We have had an on going problem with a rat in our wall/ceiling. This morning the little beggar came right out into the room. A carefully thrown T shirt was thrown to block his hole into our wall. The game began with my plan to simply drive him out any door. I fetched some appropriate weapons to return to my wife scrabbling on the floor with him in her hands but his teeth firmly sunk into her finger. One good blow with the fire handle saw to that and here is the evidence. I should mention the cat watched but had no intention of intervening but did condescend to sniff the corps. My wife is OK if a bit shocked and she works as a nurse so will be advised as to what to do with the bite. Got to say she's much braver than me as I had no intentions of picking it up.

dam things - they move away from rivers and streams to higher ground when its too wet

Na mate it's been an ongoing problem each autumn for three years now but went up to fix an adjoining barn roof before the supposed STORM and found the hole in the wall where they have been getting in. Filled it with mortar yesterday afternoon so the only way out for it was into our bedroom. BIG mistake  40cm nose to tail.
