Ide heard that too dave, something to do with human rights,as those constantly on the move obviously dont have an address, and have to be treated as special dispensation, and paid cash as part of their business.

I find it hard to believe, you be been able to get a post office account ( which accepts BACS payments) if your NFA for years, every would be thief would just go in saying they are nfa otherwise

my mate works in a scrapyard, they've got a cheque cashing office on site as well, easy way to increase the company profits- buy a hundred quids worth of metal with a piece of paper covered in numbers, then buy that piece of paper back for £95, not bad business when your buying thousands of tonnes a month.

they still pay cash for cars, I suppose theres no law saying you cant buy a car then 30 seconds later throw it up in the air with a grab

iv been going to the same scrapyard for about 5 years and they've always asked for id, but if you didn't have any that box on your receipt would just say none given, instead of driving licence/passport.

Bacs and cheques are more to do with big brother making sure you hand 40% over to the tax man than preventing theft. If you work 15 hrs a week and claim benefits you wont pay 40% then you can lay in your pit while everyone else works 6 1/2 days a week.

How can anyone ask for ID off any person, when it is not a legal requirement to carry it? even a serving police officer can only ask for proof of ID, he cannot insist upon it, and it is not an offence to NOT have proof of ID. a person living NFA, with no bank account, no service bills, no passport, no driving licence, basically has no formal ID, how can he prove who he is? Until we have a requirement in law to carry ID, and be required to produce it, many other laws will continue to be broken.

But in this context it's the law to produce proof of address and identity to sell scrap to a merchant. Once you have done this once you no longer need to produce it. They should have it on record. I just have a fob on my keys which is scanned every time I take a load in.

It's not a requirement to carry an ID, but:

An establishment such as a supermarket (or indeed a scrap yard) may (and in this case must) refuse to trade with you if you cannot provide one.

For example if I were to buy a bottle of whisky at the local, they'd have to ask me for my if on account of my youthful looks (honestly, I look that young....) even though I have been of legal drinking age for a while.

If I cannot produce one, they must refuse to sell.

So though it is not a legal requirement to carry one always, it can be legally required to produce one.
