stihl 661 v husky 390

Yeah, spot on, 580hp.

 

As you say Wyk the a.v on the stihl wins hands down from what I've read tho truthfully its not an everyday saw so I'm not to worried and eitherway it will beat the 075/076 I use now.

Eddy, I find stihl parts easier and cheaper to get, although being new out et the 661 parts won't be as readily available as the 390 as yet the aftermarket parts.

Figures where taken of my dealers website hence why I mentioned taking with a pinch of saltand you also have to take into account the variants involved so not basing to much on figures.

Also I fear the unknown, the 390 is a good saw and has been around for sometime so it can be bought with some confidence whereas the stihl is unknown within reason. I want to buy it to cut wood and don't want the aggro in unreliability or broken bits like the 550/560xp route

 

A 3120/880 will have better AV than your 076!

 

I've always found the husky parts easier, as I can call my dealer with a part number that I've already looked up, with the stihl I have to go to the dealer to search mediacat before I can order.

 

Finally, what ever you buy, you run the risk of a Friday saw, both manufacturers have their problems, so it's a risk reguardless. I'm sure, like the 660, the 390 will be replaced sooner rather than later.

Im thinking of treating myself to one or the other for xmas! Don't treat myself to much else so think a new saw maybe in order this year.

 

So we all know the 661 is new out, basically its a bigger version of the 461, its auto tune, doesn't run a mahle cylinder and power figures are 1/2hp down over the 390 (take figures with a pinch of salt tho)

 

Husky more power, uses a "real" carb etc and been around a while so issues have been ironed out.

 

Im swinging towards the husky given theres literally a fiver difference in price.

Now I know the 661 is new out so most wont have ant experience butwho would go for what?

 

1/2 a horsepower is a lot in saw terms:thumbup:

 

What is your source for "1/2 hp down over the 390"?

 

Manufacturers specs (which I guess is all we have to go by) indicate otherwise:

 

STIHL MS 660: 7.0 bhp

STIHL MS 661: 7.2 bhp

Husqvarna 390 XP: 6.4 bhp

Husqvarna 395 XP: 6.6 bhp

 

And you should take weight (power/weight ratio) into account also.

As above; wrong figures on the two saws: 390 is 4.8kW, 661 is 5.4kW !!

 

661 is the more powerful!

 

fyi the 395 is 4.9kW !

In Harry Hill terms....FIGHT. lol

The only vid comparison I've seen was a ported 390 against a new 661 that had only a few tanks thru it. The 390 was high 5's compared to 8's on the 661. Being the 661 wouldnt of settled in on the autotune it wasn't a fair comparison. However I can't see them being to far away on power terms and until there's a fair match between the 2 I'm witholding a firm opinion. We all know atmospherics and temps effect hpo along with fuel and dynos.

Lol Eddy I did push up the price on a 2008 3120 yesterday but when it got to £300 less than a 390/661 I didn't see the point in bidding higher.

My sentiments exactly spud. Both figures are manufacturers figures. I'm being led by bad thoughts and wandering if paying 65 more and get a 395 lol but where does it stop if I keep thinking like that. Also I've known a few 461 autotune carbs need replacing. Despite owning both breeds I've always swung the stihl way tho in this instance I'm swayed the other way. I'm not a fan of auto tune saws truth beknown.

 

I have a video on "what's on my bench" of the two I ported, the 395 out pulled the 390 on exactly the same bar - Stubbys 390XP and MattyFs 395XP both went pretty well:thumbup:

Will have a look for it Spudders. Is it me spud or are you as reserved aswell about these new autotune saws? I feel in 5 years time there could be lots around beyond economical repair thru carb modules etc failing?

Likewise hp is nothing without torque. Bit like the mk2 golf gti's being able to kick later mk 4-5's arses. Just cos its newer doesn't mean its better and when it goes wrong with electronics it normally isn't a cheap fix..

I think there's no doubt that it will perform as well as the other auto tunes once the bugs are out. I, too, would wait a bit before I went with one.

I am impressed by the technology and the performance it gives but not so happy at having adjustments now being out of reach where before a "quick tweak" would have resolved an issue!

That's kW, the other figures were bhp, but personally I find the power figures useless, modern stihl power ratings are at 10k rpm, husky pro saws at 9.6k rpm and husky home owner saws at 9k rpm, so is a slower engine giving more power? My 560 has never been that low when cutting at full GBL, I would be very interested in how they come up with the power ratings, on a car you have a curve, but a saw, you just have one number at mid-high revs?
