we're taking a 40' pear tree out in two weeks time.

 

is it any good for turning ?

 

Yes, but if the base section is any good (say 6'-8' long without any side branches) then consider that for milling - I would certainly be interested if it's a big enough diameter (a foot or so).

Hiya

 

Us axe and knife carvers love fresh felled birch and fruit woods, as do pole lathe turners.

The problem is getting a steady supply as once the wood is a few months old it is to dry to carve.

 

 

For us carvers some crooks are very welcome....

Is a yew tree any good ? Just blown down in the wind. Quite and old one.

if its big at the base get it milled and keep some of the bigger limbs for turners but the rest is great firewood

Yew is amazing timber . Both for milling and for turning. Have you any pictures of your fallen tree?

Not yet, I will get a pic tomorrow and post it. Also got a couple of walnut las down. But sadly someone has already ringed most of them !!!! Managed to salvage a couple of lengths !
