hello all tonight was the first time i read this thread and i didnt give it a thought that wood turning was so popular

For me it's so satisfying to process a tree into useable timber. Be it planks or bowl blanks. It must be my addictive personality but I look forward to getting on the bandsaw all day to cut blanks of an evening. It's exciting and addictive this wood lark - just need more space to store all the blanks I've cut so far!

I've found that you get some nice surprises too when a piece reveals itself on the lathe. Perhaps a piece of wood that seemed plain at first, turns out really well. So don't be to quick to chuck it on the firewood pile (incidentally - all the crotch pieces that won't split when logging make amazing figured pieces!!).

I just use bits of green wood I cut off trees when I fancy doing a bit of whittling, nothing fancy just Alder, Sycamore or Birch found locally. I have bought fancy pieces from Turners Supplies for knife handles occasionally.

What tools do you use?

Just taken down a 90 year old plum tree. Very sad. But the upshot is that the timber is incredible. Heavily figured with purples, reds, yellows, oranges swirling in the heartwood. When I get round to uploading my iPhone pictures I will post them.

I will get it all cut into blanks and end sealed over the weekend.
