technicaly a softwood is anything that produces a cone i.e. the conifers.

 

softwoods are gymnosperms where as all hardwoods are angiosperms. not all hardwoos are deciduous and not all softwoods are evergreen.

 

also some softwoods can be very hard and hardwoods can be very soft.

 

in answer to the question cedar is a softwood.

Cedar dose it come up hardwood or softwood when selling as firewood. Got quite a bit do not what to put people off by putting it in hard load.

 

 

 

Softwood but I'd never supply a softwood load of 100% cedar - it's too good for that!

 

Yew goes in hardwood log supplies though. :blushing:

Where does that definition leave Alder, that also have small cones that release seeds?

Fruit is a small, woody cone.
