Bell end here! I've got the red Zermatts. Cracking for everything except in the snow, feet are freezing!!

Solid boot, great ankle support, but they'd definately a spiking boot, lethal on wet big timber, so basically a good ground boot lol!

I've never heard a bad word about Hiax!

I have a range of boots.

Light solomons for non chainsaw, Zermatts for tree killing, Elton for summer and neoprene wellies for the wet.

Oh and jallatte riggers for Flymo Ing and warm day stealies.

Not related to Imelda Marcos are you?

Hi Dan,

First let me say that the Zermatts are very well made, apart from the laces, and will probably be one of the most long lasting boots I've owned. However, the boots are very chunky and make it difficult for me to drive in, stand in tight forks, get better grip on some small stubs and branches and they make me as clumsy as hell on the ground. They're like clown shoes, and yes, I have got the right size on.

The sole is very hard, which will no doubt go towards the boot longevity. Unfortunately the boots are not very forgiving on young or soft barked trees such as conifer and eucalyptus. A few times I've been pruning trees only to look down and see great chunks of bark peeling off beneath my feet. The boots are brilliant when used with spikes. I think someone else mentioned on a previous boot thread about having a pair of Zermatts for doing takedowns, and a pair of Airstreams for all other work. As my work involves a mix of take downs and pruning I need a boot that can be used for both, and the Airstreams are far more sympathetic on trees I have found.

Cheers,

Matthew

Yea ... I find the Zermattas big and clumpy and not bendy at all . As you say good for spiking and comical for walking !

So are you saying that they have softened enough for general climbing?

I stay on the ground if I can help it my mate does most of the climbing . What I am saying is they seem to be ok for ground work now when initially I found them too stiff . My feet are wide and they have enough room to acomodate them without pressure points . I could happily wear them all day in the woods if needs be .
