Shall I stick with a 254?

Hi guys,

New to the site and this is the first time I've ever posted on a forum! Hope someone can help. I was given a 1998 254xp to help me get through my cs 30,31 earlier this year off a friend who said it was struggling to start, I serviced it straight away and although this is my first saw I feel as though it starts and runs fine. Whilst on my course one of the lads had a new 550xp which I used to do some snedding when mine run out of fuel and found it much more maneuverable even though it had a 15" bar compared to my 13". My question is this- do I stick with the "Legend" or do I Upgrade to the modern 550? Any help greatly appreciated.

If its running well i'd stick with it for sure. You'll be the envy of a lot of people!

Well the 550 is lighter, better AV and more power, or a 560, which is bigger, and more power still, and run both, you can mod the 254, and it won't ruin any warranty

Stick with the 254xp!! but I'd put a slightly bigger bar on it, that was my first saw back in the day and it never let me down! look on here for all the guys who are having issues with there nice shiny new 550's!!!!

Bellamy, if it's running fine at the mo, I'd keep running it and if you have the funds/need for a new saw then get that as and when. The 254 would make a good back up saw or if not should be quite easy to move on, especially being a late model and even more so if it's in nice condition.

 

FWIW, I've had no problems with my 550 so far and have had it about 18 months now.

Im with the majority, stick with the 254.

Do a search on here to find out how unreliable and the poor back up on the 550xp.
