I am told the payload could be 1200 ish but I don't know for sure. So yes you have a point. A full 5cube might be a bit too much. But I was just trying to give a comparison for others to have some idea.

Fair do's - the sad thing is it will probably cope with more than that but the vosa guys might not agree.

Good luck

HI HODGE there one of the largest 4X4 breakers in the uk mate CWS they will have loads of them thanks but like you say you need the lot and some one who nos what there doing thanks jon

I remeber an article in one of the Land Rover mags about a company carrying out the conversions and they had to get the new engines from Jaguar as Land Rover will not supply them but the big cost in time and development was in successfully getting the electronics for the engine to work with the rest of the vehicle.

The TD5 will be fine standard, my mewp & trailer combo goes at 2.6t, & its a breeze to tow.

I did get mine chipped, but that's because I wanted to, not needed to.

When our old land rover had lost its newness we shoved it in the workshop and got our fitter to fit a mewp + hydraulic winch+spades +pullout tow bar. The poor old girl now weighs a few kilos under the three ton. We fitted the fd35 nissan engine in it and it now pulls the whole thing with ease even with a chipper up its arse. This lot must have a train weight of 4 tons , HP is not everything its torque that turns wheels.

Hydraulics are pto driven off the transfer box, there is a hydraulic switch over valve to divert from the mewp and a two way spool valve just for the winch. Its 6ton pull or twelve with the snatch block. With all the weight of the thing sat on the spades it really is a good anchor and pulls like hell. Being hydraulic it never gets tired or hot.

Sorry Mendip - don't know how to pull a quote - my clutch worry was about the cabstar not the landy as using low box helps tons.

going back to what others mentioned about capacity, I think the box on ours holds 4.5 cube. vehicle weighs 2.2T with one guy sitting in seat.

Im glad I've asked the question about pulling power of a defender which it seems is not a problem. If it is, get it chipped a bit. Not too much so I don't rag the bits and bobs to bits and pieces.

But I keep wondering whether I might be better with a new cabstar for not far off the same money. I've got a transit as a replacement at the moment which does pull quite well but it's wide. That's one reason I like the cabstar. And obviously neither have 4x4.

Please can somebody just make a decision for me!!!
