I have been working in the tree industry for a couple of years in both england and canada. unfortunately i have not picked up any tickets. now that i am looking for a new job it is extremely difficult to find work without possesing my cs tickets. i want to get them as i know they are vital in the industry but simply can't afford them. does anyone know if there are any grant schemes to help in training tree surgeons?

You need to go to your local library and ask if they have a list of local charitable trusts. You then need to look at the fund granting criteria of each trust and write to those who fund training, some of the grants will be small (up to £250) and some come in the form of intrest free grants that need to be repaid at some point. There if nothing to stop you applying to more than 1 trust.

Recent examples I've been involved with are, a local trust that provides up to £250 to young people who live within a particular parish, in another a relative got a £5k loan over 5 years to help them set up in business.

May also be worth talking to your local further education provider to see if they know of any training grants available.

This one may be worth a call -- Charitable Trust | Institute of Chartered Foresters & Arboriculturists

Tell your prospective new employer that you will work for free the first month if he puts you through your tickets.

Offer a first week free 'helping out' to get your foot in the door and show him that you actually know what you are doing too.

You could work the whole month legit prior to him booking your tickets (no risk to him) so long as you are on jobs with a guy holding the correct tickets 'supervising you'.

Where are you based? I need a guy for a month.
