  1. Thanks Alec sadly the numbers have worn off the bar. I’ll get counting....
  2. Hey guys a little help with bar and chain size. Firstly im gonna admit to being useless with numbers and don’t really understand all the numbers on bars and chains (especially on bars where the numbers have rubbed off!) usually I just go in to the shop, drop the saw on the counter and say “new chain please” to avoid any confusion! So, I’m just about to start milling a little. My saw at present has a 20” bar (measured from tip to body housing) i ordered this chain thinking it’d do the job.... STIHL 20" INCH RIPPING CHAIN 75RD x.3/8" 063 BY OREGON but it’s too short. Have i I ordered the wrong chain or measured my bar incorrectly?! Or have I been sent the wrong chain?!? any advice welcome, and a link to something to help me understand bar and chains correctly would be most appreciated!!!!
  3. thanks mate. i look forward to hearing from you
  4. I am looking for a large straight trunk to create a dug out canoe. I have made one with poplar and would now like to try carving one from cedar if I can source a good size trunk for a good price. It needs to be approx 7ft long and 2ft diameter but beggars can't be choosers! Anyone have any ideas on who to contact? I am based in Bristol. Thanks for you help

After all these storms I figure there must be loads 'lying around' and a lot of tree guys interested in milling but no mill. I figure we can split the hoard........ Everybody's happy! send me a pm if interested
  10. I have been working in the tree industry for a couple of years in both england and canada. unfortunately i have not picked up any tickets. now that i am looking for a new job it is extremely difficult to find work without possesing my cs tickets. i want to get them as i know they are vital in the industry but simply can't afford them. does anyone know if there are any grant schemes to help in training tree surgeons?
  11. thanks for the speedy replies
  12. i recently spent a year as an arborist in canada. i met a guy who 'recycled' the wood: carving, making table tops, bowls, even log boats! unfortunately i didnt get to spend as much time as i wanted with the guy but decided i'd really like to do this back here in england. my uncle has even been good enough to lend me his alaskan mill. all i need now is some big trees to fell, and a willing person to teach me some skills. i'm finding it difficult to find people that do this kind of work, but i'd be willing to come and help out a carver/cabinet maker/anyone who's interested and got the means and knowledge to do stuff like this. let me know if there's anyone around the bristol area. thanks!!!

  16. hi my dad has asked me about his neighbours tree back in st albans. i think its a mature whitebeam. approx 40ft. he's asked the neighbour if he minds me reducing the tree, maybe 30%, because its blocking the light into his garden in the evening. it's a council house so would i be able to do any work to the tree??
