Good call,same family I think but i'll stick with with my guess.i can't see any fruit in pic and as they ripen soon on a mulberry, should be able to see some?

Still could be though.

Corylus possibly , bark and leaves have similar characteristics.

A bit of lateral thinking and a bit of Internet research reveals the presence, amongst others, of Mulberry in the walled garden at Battle Abbey; is that where the tree was?

 

Yes, I realise I'm not the first to mention Mulberry.
