Is it a shillelagh?

no, i believe they are a whole branch that has the bark stripped and they use the section that was part of the tree to act as the knob end whereas mine was a 4" thick stem that i quartered and the knob is where there was a branch out from that stem.

apparently there is a difference?

like i care, it was something different to make and i had fun doing it...

That’s very nice Steve how long did it take. It would double as a nice tw##ing stick if the need arose , I may need a walking stick after I recover enough from my accident I would like to make a steampunk sword stick , nice job I bet your mate was well chuffed.

Cheers Mark

i don't think my mate was a chuffed as me as i've never done anything like it before...

not sure how long it took as it was done in dribs and drabs over a period of weeks to months. if you want a stick mate i still have the prototype if you are interested? i made it for the right hand and is made of catalpa which is remarkably strong given that it seems such a soft timber.

  • 2 months later...

turned an urn for a dog recently and thought it would be a nice line to get into as i have plenty of timber big enough.

this is made from african walnut Lovoa trichilioides (which is actually in the mahogany family) and has a small lump of sap on it. i left it a bit thick on the base so it's not top heavy.

the prototype is about 6" tall and the main urn around 10"x 5 1/2"
