Been looking into this years holiday.

Decided not to buy a caravan.

Looking into hiring a campervan out instead. Actually quite cheap when you look at them. And just means we can drive and stop. Looking into sites along the routes. We want to go Cornwall, then up to Devon then probably a nice drive back home.

Personally I think it's getting too expensive to go caravaning, it used to be a decent cheap holiday, but if you own a decent van, take out depreciation, insurance running and servicing costs and some of the stupidly high site fee's it's not cheap anymore, that and being crammed in like a sardine on some sites.

Most of the big sites (and some small ones) want you to book a minimum of 3 days during season, which is not great if like us you move on after a night or 2 at most, it's ok if you are going away a lot and out of season imo.

Sold my spectrum 620 after a pretty scary bum cheek clenching incident on the M2,

You want to join the caravan and camping club. Spend £41 on a membership (yourself and partner and up to 4 kids under 18) and you will save the cost on your first week on a club site in your caravan or camper or tents. We use a trailer tent. The sites are clean and regulated, no cramming into any available space, no noise after 11 p.m and you get a monthly magazine and a site book plus there are certificated sites and local meets on school playing fields during holidays and some farmers let out fields but you need your own toilet for those meets. We've been on some CS on farm fields for under £5 a night.

I'd go with the camper-van. When my parents were younger they travelled everywhere in their camper-van. They left the UK in Late March and weren't back until late October.

We very occasionally managed to borrow it, and as the younger children were small one slept between the front seats and the other in the luton part. We explored the East coast of this country between Brightlingsea and Kings Lynn. At the time we thought we should have grey wigs to wear when pulling into some of the very small 'Caravan Club' campsites but we were always given a warm welcome!

Being one of the non turbo machines we were always at the front of any queue!!!!

Now I'm older I have found that a lot of my friends are buying these and we're in the market for providing space for them to use as a base.....

I wish you every bit as much fun as we had!
