I'll be watching this: I've noticed several with bare stems. One in particular is a maiden mulitstemmed tree, though not a large one: for the first time the lower half is seethrough as it has no leaves, just a mass of thin bare stems. However in the last few weeks new shoots have appeared in places.

I can't believe this is down to 'the winter', not with holly.

same here seen several will be interested what the problem is.

P. ilicis causes dieback from the tip of the leaves and works up the plant. This looks similar but difficult without any leaves. You can get ELISA field test kits for these

I can remember a short time back someone posting they also had problems with some holly. Having looked round the grounds there are quite a few showing signs with sparce foliage, some are showing new growth mainly on the sun side, the shade side is still sparce

Just to keep Mr Rainford on his toes ( because I know he loves this sort of thing) here's another problem with a juglans on the same site

 

The last picture looks like some sort of leaf miner or bagworm eating the inside of the leaf
