I was a lead climber on utility work for a couple of years, had a 3man team including myself, held permits, fitted earths and had all my certs. All for £8 an hour and I know it would have been another year before I saw any rise...they payed for all my certs and gear and were a great bunch of guys but the money was piss poor so I left. Seems to vary quite a bit over the country

Going rate unfortunately. Least you get holiday pay, sick pay, pension soon (if not now) use work vehicle all day, use company saws/equipment etc, all PPE supplied. It won't be taxing work all day everyday. 8 hours then go home an forget about it, for a second climber it seems like an alright deal.

Spot on, the bottom line is if you can live on that money then it's a fine wage if you can't then it's crap, everyones outgoings are different. But as Mozza says its 8 hours and stop, a lot of self employed/small business owners would be on less if they worked out there real working hours, hgv drivers around here are on £7 an hour. :001_rolleyes:

In the strimmer thread loads saying they charge over 20 quid an hr etc I could never charge that much round here though I don't think.

Seems that there is massive variation it pay regionally & between different companies.

Im not really bitching about the pay as such,i just wanted a heads up at to the general pay scale of utility firms else where our lot are a bit cloak and dagger when it comes to pay scales, some get more than others for doing the same job although they've been there less time, and are no more qualified,it all seems a bit odd to say the least.

Ive just read a couple of comments ie 7 pound an hour lorry driving etc,but it is only driving those guys and girls ,are more at risk from boredom and bad diets, they don't work with the inherent dangers that we do every day, tree surgery is danderous as it is throw power lines in the mix and you've doubled the danger,i just think that in this day and age the pay should be better.

I dare say 9 out of 10 lorry drivers would beg to differ:sneaky2:

I suspect the gangs I see work a bit harder when I'm there but they arrive at 6:00 travel to site and seldom get back before 17:00 and are expected to work anywhere any time. This is a much longer working day than I was used to and anyone worth his salt with a few years experience needs over a tenner/hour.

Maybe they do and I agree that it should be better paid BUT the grim reality is, it isn't. Bigger company's (especially power company's, in the experiences ive had and I have read/reading about on here) pay less to employees.
