I've run a fair few stoves, some imported but mostly British, including recently Clearview, Coalbrookdale and Esse. Can't say I've noticed the local products suffering any great quality gap in either design or construction.

Hi,

I have direct experience of Aarow, Clearview, Dunsley, and Morso - first three British, last you know about already.

I don't like the Aarow; Clearview is brilliant though - very low amount of ash, high combustion, very hot. I have a Dunsley Highlander 10 Central Heating wood boiler stove in my own house (3 beds) that does all our heating needs - the only form of heating completely. It is great. Much cheaper than LPG.

i personally wouldnot buy british stoves and would go for a jotul

Jotul dedicated 'woodburner only' stoves are good but I wouldn't advise you to buy a multifuel version. We've got a friend with a multifuel F100 and it's absolute rubbish. Several local dealers/installers/fuel suppliers have told me the same thing. Jotul seem to have simply dropped an ashpan/grate arrangement in and it's knackered up the airflow system.

In the 4-5kw stove market another British stove to look at would be a Charnwood Country 4. We've got one and after a bit of tweaking it's not bad. The Clearview Pioneer 400 is a good stove but not cheap. The Morso Squirrel 1410 is as already mentioned, a good little stove but make sure you get the clean burning version. It really does chuck out more heat than the 'standard' one. Euroheats Harmony 23 is a cracking smallish stove. The Esse 100 pictured in a previous link is a popular stove and works well. We've got an old Esse Dragon Mk 1 and that's a nice (if leaky!) stove.

We've also got a couple of cheap chinese made 'Tigers'. They're pretty rough as they come but we've modified them to woodburning only and completely re-lined the firebox with insulating brick. Now they perform really well.

I have a Franco Belge / belfort it good great air wash on it to keep the glass clean. http://www.fireplacesaver.co.uk/details.php?id=65

Plus points it cast and well insulted at the back i have mine 3 inch away from plaster and no cracks in it yet :) it hasnt deformed or bent even when useing coal at a high temputure unlike welded plate that we reweld often when people try force them apart id avoid a welded stove, for such a small fire it gives out a alot heat it heats my living room 20F - 10F np.

Bad points like alot of 5 kw to 7 kw fires the fire box can be to small i cut my wood 7" inch long and 5" roll that way can get 2 halfs in and be ok for 3/4 of a hour over a evening you can get 5 loads in ( up and down 5 times when the wife reminds you :). If you bank it up with coal it will stay in for the night wood it wont :(. They havent made a water jacket for it yet other models yes but not this one yet june 2009.

~Im looking to heat my radiators and hot water of a bigger stove so upgrading anyone seen or used the Broseley Hercules 20B?
