Interesting to note how branch grafts were developing/inosculating & now starting to provide structural support within the canopy.

 

Also the absence of algae under the grafts, drawing the eye & highlighting the grafts even more so.

I've only ever come across partial circumfrence cankers of this size before.

 

This one is pretty much complete.

Beech have a rather underestimated capacity to cover wounds, and are considered "fragile" with regards to their durability but images like those above contradict that view, as do many many fine old beeches within the ancient woodlands I visit.

 

I have seen massive stubs entirely enclosed by beech, they are remarkable trees and far more durable than they are given credit for.

I came across this beauty the other day resplendent with blue bells growing in a root fold.
