One good thing you have on you side is youth. We often get guys from your situation with more years under their belts who could struggle to get up to speed quick enough especially if they want to climb. Like the other have said there are some good training companies about and your forces funding should help with this as it can work out costly. It's competitive and it hard work but you'll be used to that. Good luck :thumbup1:

Contact TKF Training, Holmfirth. They have great courses to suit ex-service and you can use Enhanced Learning Credits to help pay for your course. Just back from there and there were 3 RAF, and 2 army on the course.

Aye have been using tkf great company/course providers

Welcome to civ div me boy lol

Tim, look for the arb firms around where you're going to live and offer yourself up for unpaid work experience during your resettlement leave etc. After that its all about proving yourself up for it. In the meantime get yourself on a course. Tkf does 30,31,38, 39 (new equivalents) plus business training.

Make the most of the funding you can get hold of. ELC and SLC's.

put that lot together and you become a useful proposition for a firm to take on.

My advice would be to find a course that will qualify to be founded by you're enhanced learning credits, and one that will not only give you you're practical cs tickets but also teach the theory about the trade and what we do. There are to many guys who sit a few weeks cs tickets and then seam to think they know all there is to know about being a tree surgeon.

I left the army 5 years ago and made this mistake so I'm talking from experience and I've learnt and still learning things the very hard and expensive way.

Feel free to give me a ring Tim if you would like to talk further, I'm more then happy to help if I can, also I may be able to sort out the odd days work experience in bristol for you.

Hello Tim

Welcome to the Forum .. lots of useful information in the threads . if your not sure use the Search tab ,, the questions will in the main be answered

Mod to Civ isnt as hard a transfer as you might think , I did it I'm ex Raf

loads of positives about ex forces guys , try to go for the commercial sector as these firms are in the main at the forefront of Arb .

I'd try ringing a few firms its much better than an email or letter , as they can get overlooked , ring them up and politley tell them your tale & what you hope to do , what you can offer , your drive & enthusiasm ,personal commitment , physical fitness , good communicator , vehicle driver , machinery capabilities, & if they would consider you ,and if so what qualitys they are looking for & what industry quals or experience they look for ? ! ,

then go for it , get the quals at a training centre , To get experience you can offer to do free days for good firms, you'll learn more than you can from just a training experience,

as you probably know from the Job, once you've passed out / finished your training thats when the real learning starts

all the best Iain
