Dude... You ask for people's opinions and when given you reject them? Why ask?

If you think you can modify a harness to a better spec than Petzl - a multi million pound international company... Go for it!

If it were me (and I've climbed on one for years) I would leave it be. It's a good harness, your not going to make it better or safer, quite the opposite.

You want to replace alloy and webbing with steel? Are you going to climb on steel carabiners and steel rope?

This whole topic is moo...

Is there a safety concern though with the maillons and the rigging plate, in my mind every component it of sufficient strength and will be loaded correctly.

Why were you concerned with the connectors being steel?

Cheers

Steve

i think he was meaning that you shouldn't be connecting alloy with steel because of wear issues

Steve, I climbed on those maillons on my bridge early on in my career. They can and do twist and cross-load (they are strong enough to take it), but when they click back into spine-loading at 80ft you'll wish you had spent some time designing easily washable underpants instead of all this malarky you are banging on about.

Innovation is great, but implying that experienced climbers are climbing on crap systems on a harness that isn't well designed is pretty insulting.

I'm not being harsh, come along to some of the reccy climbs and shows and learn from some real experts,

I'm definitely not in that category, but we can have a beer afterwards!

Im not trying to suggest that the standard gear and setups are crap, they just don't feel right for me.

I know some ppl that use hitch climbers and have had a go on them, I just have something in mind that is built around how I want to climb.

Honestly if the normal setup works for you then I can see that it is as simple and reliable as you'd want, I'm just after something different that is suited to me and my style.

After reading this and your other thread with the weird rope setup, i think you'd benefit from going along to a rec climb near you. You'll learn alot about rope access in the tree world, which is completely different to any other rope access job.

Trust your harness, there are alot of people on here who have been using Sequoia's for years with no problem. Tree climbing is one of the most simple and pure activities you can do - don't try to over complicate something that can be performed with a bit of old three strand rope, three knot system, a chunky belt and still be alot of fun.

I used to use a delta maillon on my bridge, it worked, but there is a reason I, and many others, use an aluminium ring instead. It works alot better. I can't see any blindingly terrible flaws in your idea, but can I see it as an improvement? Heck no. It sounds hellish. More chance of cross loading, more bulk, more weight, a longer system, what is there to like? Not enough attachment points? Put another ring on your bridge?

As Mr. Bolam kinda said, there's a reason professionals use the system they use...
