Hayfever advice…

Anyone got any advice for coping with hayfever, such as medications that have worked especially well for you, or little tips for minimising the effects? (e.g. have heard vaseline under the nose helps to catch the pollen?)

Typically I suffer really badly from May–June so trying to prepare early!

Thanks

I use beconase which is pretty effective and works out cheaper than buying pills, spray morning and night up each nostril. The over the counter stuff I think recommends only to use for limited period but doctor has had me prescribed on exactly the same stuff for a year now and is comfortable for me to carry on.

Go to doc's and get a prescription for the tablets and nose spray I think it's called neoclarytn. Also make sure when you get home change your clothes and shower etc, also make sure you take tablets etc well before you go out in the morning to give it time take effect. If u don't get to the doc's try alternating the over the counter tablets I found that helps.

I have a repeat prescription for eye drops nasal spray and tablets, went to the doc 20odd years ago after doing a load of ragwort pulling I had slime coming from my eyes and more snot than fungus the bogey man, prior to that they didnt take me seriously!!??

The tablets are called telfast 1 aday work well, eye drops sorry cant remember the name couple of drops then no eye issues and the nasal thing as and when.! costs me £21 a year in prescriptions but I can work issue free, so go see the quack sooner rather than later.

As a lifetime sufferer of hayfever, i`ve had injections, taken tablets and used nasil sprays with varying results.

Sometimes it reaches a point where i am unable to work and have to get indoors for a time.

An off the wall solution? Chewing the soft centres of a grass stem sorts it for a short time. Not ideal, but it works for me if i`m desperate and dont mind looking like a yokel.

I was introduced to a fantastic cure a couple of years ago.Works for me, and allows me to function normally during high pollen count days.Quite cheap too, but i cant really endorse it as its a tobacco product: snuff.Transformed my summers. There it is, read into it as you will.

If you're planning on taking the common "1 a day" antihistamine tablets, then I would suggest:

1. Buy cheap generic ones from the supermarket. They are a fraction of the price of the well-known brands, and are the same medicine - often manufactured by the same company.

2. There are several different ones. Find out works for you and stick with it. I take Cetirizine, because it's the only common one that works for me.

You want to find a local bee keeper and see if they have any honey for sale. The honey will contain the pollens that cause the hay-fever and by taking the honey it will make your body get used to the pollens. We keep bees and as a gardener I take spoonful of our honey everyday, works for me. You also want to see if they will sell you any bee propolis as its one of the most powerful natural antibiotics you can get. Propolis is the residue bees produce to fill gaps in the hive, helps keep the colds away.
