I'm no expert on the matter but I don't think you have to have passed your driving test in order to be insured. You can buy car insurance as a learner.

From that I am assuming you would be insured for a trailer with or without the specific test.

It doesn't apply to me anyway, and I wouldn't recommend putting it to the test without checking.

Nope, you are insured to drive the categories you are licenced for, if you have a provisional licence you are licenced as long as you fulfil the provisional conditions.

If you extend your thinking to other categories you could drive an artic, its just a trailer after all.......

They have spells of pulling all vans and pickups around here. Usually nitpicking over stupid little things. Know of one bloke who was made to have 3 MOT's in as many months!

Has anybody been "done" for not having trailer license, ever?

I said to someone the other day they needed a license to pull a trailer, they said they weren't bothered and nobody gets done anyway.

Good, if he had to get an MOT to lift a GV9 I applaud them and condemn your mate. Keeping the roads free from shoddily maintained vehicles is what they are there for.

The fact that he got 3 prohibition notices in as many months it shows a piss poor attitude to the condition of the vehicle he is using on the roads he shares with our wives and children.

Well they said my drivers license was not valid for towing a trailer and I have to go on an extra test to be able to tow one. I was lucky as I was let off with a warning.

How heavy was the trailer? What was the total weight? What was the MAM marked on the plate of the vehiclee?

Anyway get a B+E test booked, it will be an ongoing investment

lad at work got done for towing a trailer, his licence did not cover him for it because of his age. £60 statutory fine and test for towing a trailer above 750Kg

Afraid its nothing to do with HIS age but more to do with the age of his licence. Holders of licences issued after 1997 are restricted in trailer weight.

I think one of the reasons he was made to have a full MOT was due to a rear light lens being cracked.

Hardly something that is going to wipe out all the wives and children on the roads is it.

As I said, they were nitpicking. The earlier poster said he was let off for not having a trailer test, he would have got jail if this gang had got him.

I wasn't defending anybody that has an unroadworthy vehicle, I was saying that VOSA can, and do, go a bit OTT at times. Apparently they are self funding these days so are inclined to administer as many fines as possible.

See the "overloaded" thread if you want better examples of who is more likely to wipe out wives and children.

Thats what I meant, boss's son was in same year at school and he is ok didn't have to take trailer test because of when he passed his test even though 6 months later he got his licence suspended due to medical reasons

So once they may have issued a prohibition for a cracked lens but you aren't sure? What was wrong with it the other two times?

Getting found with defects three times in three months will get you on the "pull this joker over" database and rightly so.
