Holly is'nt a pleasent smell imo nor is oak,

Funny, I like the smell of oak, and didn't notice anything bad about holly. Some of the elm I've done has had a really sweet smell about it - not sickly, just really pleasant.

Worked for cabinet maker in my teens, before a disgruntled ex-employee burnt the workshop down. Fifty years of collecting specimen wood the world over... gone in 24hrs. The different smells of drying timber, worked wood and bee wax; it has stayed with me.

whilst running an old board of cherry thru the planer today, it gave off a wonderful honey aroma. i hadnt noticed this before with cherry. oak, out here smells like olive wood when milled. french oak i thought smelled like capers, and english oak very spicey, like curry powder. what causes this, anyone? anyone else noticed unusual aromas from woods?

You should be a sommelier with a nose like that!

Love the smell fresh cut oak.

Felled a couple of almond trees the other day. They had a wonderful sweet fruity smell.
