thats the ticket looks like a good piece of kit when we were in whitby last week we went on the road between whitby and pickering and on the moors there was baled up heather have they started using heather for biomass or for some other reason

In the days before teram and other geotextiles wire tied heather bales were used under road formations across wet ground.

The whole wood burning thing has increased massively over the last five years. A lot of woody material gets turned to chip and left to rot. I struggle to get bushy brash into my incinerator and if I chip it green its hard to burn. But if I had a machine like a cardboard baler that made 18" bales they would fit nicely into my incinerator and I bet when dry, would contain a large amount of btus ideal for a large farm straw burning incinerator. The machine would be quieter than a chipper and not require the blades sharpening or bearings changed. The bales could be stacked in a chip box and still tipped out at the end of the day or loaded onto a cheaper vehicle ie ifor trailer and staked high. Is this a mad idea anyone have any thoughts. :001_smile:

Just bought a big industrial binding machine (£12k new ~ £350 ebay) to play with to do just that. The tension is adjustable so I wanted to see if it was practical to bale a brash / willow coppice for use in smaller boilers. Will let you know if it works or will be trying to offload a cheap binding machine if it doesn't.

Any chance of some pictures? How does it knot? String or wire?

It uses that polyethylene (?) tape/webbing that you get around heavy boxes. It supposedly can have the tension adjusted quite a lot so hopefully it will pull a bundle tight and then heat weld itself. And then again maybe it wont! Electrician is meant to be plumbing it in next week so we will see.
