Tis the way of a bonkers modern world. Why do/did we import butter, lamb, apples from New Zealand and cause hardship to our own growers?! There are many other examples.

Free trade. A global market for goods so there bought from the cheapest supplier. If you tried to limit this to support a national industry with, say import tariffs restrictions etc it would be called a trade war or protectionism.

I still think complete free trade in all resources is abit bonkers though I agree, especially for important strategic resources stuff like oil & gas (energy) maybe even food that gets sold to the highest bidder.

This is why i think fracking all over UK won't mean cheaper gas coz they are private companies they will sell to the highest global bidder which might mean china etc not impacting UK prices much.

Some resources like gas should be held in reserve imo by the goverment, & only tapped when or if global prices go beserk imo.

Recent it was the news UK was only one tanker away of ruining down to empty. Would of beign interesting to see what would of happened if the tanker didn't arrive just in time.

UK gas supply pressure eased with arrival of tanker from Qatar | Environment | The Guardian

Sorry gone off on a bit of a rant :001_rolleyes:

It's like the oil found off the Irish coast, people think 'oh Ireland will have its own oil and fuel will get cheaper' but of course the rights have been sold by the government so the oil will be exported and the government will get a small percentage if the revenue generated.
