Find the shortest cutter (master) via a set a callipers and off you go. This is where the file guide comes into its own, its also great for large saws when milling etc

File guides with the chain in a vice at home or the bar in a clamp hammered into a stump when out.If its wrecked i use an electric bench grinder. With care, the grinder does sort out all the angles very nicely and gives equal cutter lengths, it is however, easy to grind off a lot of useable cutter.

Rather like the look of that granburg file guide might be a future investment, no harm in a bit more precision than my wonky eyes

I wouldnt bud. You would be better off with the oregan or stihl file guide bud. If in doubt mail RobD 👍

Dan (desert rat) has tried both and he reckons the oregon file guide is better (both better made and actually using it)... the Stihl one is exactly the same one painted orange! So really it's the oregon or the granberg.

But then the Granberg is the original and still works well... not had a chance to really compare the two yet myself.

Well, I tried a new Granberg the other day. A remarkable difference for this - admittedly pretty inexperienced - user. For what it's worth, there's what appears to be a very good guide on using it on Amazon in the reviews, too.

Maybe in another 20 years I'll become a dab hand and hand-sharpening without any sort of guide, but for the moment this did a _lot_ better for me with an old chain that had got well out of spec than the clip on guides.

I`ve voted for 3, most of the time its free hand, some times knock a stump vice in, back in workshop in bench vice and file guide, or if its real bad electric bench grinder.
