I watch them train on the big pylons near where I work in the summer. They start on a shortened version then work there way up to a full scale pylon. They bought a cherry picker in one year that reached to the top of the pylon. I did speak to an instructor and he said he had a high respect for anyone who climbs trees with chainsaws, climbing a pylon was much easier

Seen them a couple of times rigging conductors on the pylons or doing repairs. Come along in a helicopter, clip on and away they go. Also saw a guy hanging from a line below a helicopter doing insulator inspections on the transmission lines. They just hung him there and flew from tower to tower.
