Right just to clarify this: you may take 5m^3 of millable timber and only sell 2m^3 of that, that applies to any tree over 8cm in diameter measured at 1.5m from the ground, this may be done per quarter, with each quarter corresponding to the 3 months jan/feb/mar, apr/may/jun, and so on, within the 2nd and 3rd quarters extreme caution must be taken due to nesting birds, you will learn this on the nptc course though. And they are Sitka, they probably won't be covered by tpo or CA but if you do apply for a felling licence they can make you replant it, tree for tree

Contact your local woodland officer, it doesn't cost a penny and they'll even visit the site. Yes you will need a felling licence, but it's not a big deal, you may be able to make a claim for grant money more likely in England than in Scotland to assist with re-stocking costs (broadleaf). It doesn't matter about species, looking at it, it was probably planted under a grant scheme so the Fc may well have records. Don't worry about it, tea and chocolate digestives will win over the woodland officer. Where in the uk are you?

I'll be down in Devon, if the sale all goes through ok. Replanting isn't a bad thing if we can plant broadleaf, we'll be using the area for a few bell tents/yurts so planting new trees around them is part of the plan anyway.

Getting the stumps out will be the interesting bit I think.

Will have to get the woodland officer round once we've moved.

sitka or norway spruce, if your really lucky the root plate wont be very deep and youll be able to pull them out easily, if there sitka, it a good white constructional timber you could use for a lot of your framing work, reaonably stable , but spews resin from knots and defects

I've problably missed/misread something somewhere, but why do you want to get the stumps out? If you're doing a clear-fell/restock, just plant in the places that aren't occupied by stumps. :thumbup1:

The stumps won't be very comfy to sleep on under your tent..... ;)

Depending on budget either mulch/grind the stumps or use an excavator to bury them in a line, you'll also create a nice bund for shelter for tents. Don't plant on it though as there's an increased risk of the trees being blown over.

As you're in Devon you're under the english woodland grant scheme so depending on the overall site size you may well be able to claim some grant money towards the costs. The W/O will be able to advise you as to which is most appropriate for your site.
