I know we all buy stuff off the Internet and thus taking money away from our local economy but I thought our council would favour a local firm as they can be there in a flash to look at jobs and do emergency work. What happens now when a tree falls over and blocks a road? They call up the firm in Cheshire or wherever and there gonna be 90 mins to respond?

its all about the money they have saved (not spent) at the end of the year, reliability and quality of work does not come into it now.

Does the fact that the contract winner is a way off necessarily mean that no-one local will do the work, or some of it anyway? Is there no subbing allowed?

One of my last employer's computer systems was contracted out to a company 4,000 miles away but it was run by locals.

We've just started doing work for Balfour Beatty who now prioritise local firms. Think it's a great idea and means that local small contractors get a look in. A step in the right direction.

Council tree work always seems more hassle than its worth. Let the firm spend all there profits on diesel and there staff get peeved with 2 hours commuting every day.

It's all about the money. If only your local guys could have put in cheaper quotes. Surely you could if they have a 100 mile commute.

Anyway , as someone who travels for work I am proud that we as a firm bring in money into our community so I guess it cuts both ways.

What about our multinationals winning contracts abroad. Now surely thats a good thing.

I heard the local firm wasn't far off on price, I think that just shows how tight it is.
