Good luck to them. Driving restrictions/tachographs, servicing every 6 weeks, loading in the rain/sleet/snow, away from home a lot. they deserve every penny.

The profit is there if they have full time work, but that isn't always the case. If you want reliable hauliers, they also have to renew or at least update their lorries/trailers/cranes fairly regularly. I definately wouldn't want to do it

I'm out of the log game now but I was reading some where that some of the cord hauliers are making £500-600 a day just for haulage. This was after running costs!...I guess they are paying tax on the amount mentioned. Still sounds like a lot of money to me.

HI EGGS mate ask NICK he will tell i think theres not a lot in it for them dev at £1.30lt but what do you do s the lorry will only 6/9 miles to the gallon :thumbdown:all the best jon

Ha... Don't think so.... There's plenty muppets moving timber for £175 load or £7 ton..

I work on £650-750 a day before diesel... Normally end up with 3-400 after diesel for a 6.30am start and 6-7pm finish... And that's solid working.. No breaks.. Obviously you can only drive for 4.5 hrs then have to have a 45 min break.. But with loading and unloading that's classed as break.... If vosa ask I was being cross loaded and unloaded...

All artic drivers/ lorry drag drivers work on £650 day but that's on flat work... Timber is more specialist and bloody hard on the unit and lorry doesn't get switched off all day as unloading and loading...

If I had to rely on it for a living it'd be sold in morning...

You posted on another forum yesterday saying you were getting £500/600 a day after running costs:thumbdown:

Do you want me to get a link?

Do you want me to get a link?

Rates are based on £650 day or £750 if longer distance.

I run close to wind and in doing so I can get an extra load or what I call half load in.. (Load on way home so it's ready to go early next morn). That gets me another £150-200 day.. My min cost per load even for a mile is £250...

I run 4 diff trailers... Low loader and 45 flat on hay and straw is most profitable..hay and straw will give me £1000 after diesel some days.. But that's more about knowing where to sell, and where to get straw from.. All our straw goes west Wales area, Devon/ Cornwall... They pay £85 ton for it and we produce it or buy it locally accordingly..

Low loader is similar.. 2 local £350 runs back home for lunch £150 diesel... But don't get me wrong there's people who will o same 2 runs for £150 each..

This is why I pick and choose work we do, and can do that by havin 4 diff trailers.. Low loader or timber hauliers will only be doing there thing.. My cousin half mile away asked me for price to move 4 loads ash 3 mile round trip..

I told him £200 load as favour.. Someone from Sussex did it for 100 load..

Running straw in summer for instance, two 8 weekly checks cost less than £200.. One check on timber for 8 weeks just cost over £1000.. Tyre on trailer with sidewall damage.. Set air pipes on rear axle where lump cord slipped.. Air bag on trailer, suspension fault on unit... And that doesn't include 2 hydraulic hoses on crane... But 8 weeks before cost nothing.. Mainly as was loading off a farm yard on concrete most time..

Nice one. You've just basically admitted that if VOSA pull you or any of your lorries your tachos may be tampered with so make it look like they have ha a break.:001_rolleyes: In my opinion a 45 min break means you rest for 45 mins (Have a kip, cup or two of coffee, relax, etc). Not load and unload a lorry as that is still classed as work.

More old spiel Nick!.....it does not get away from the fact that you said on another forum that you and other timber hauliers were having up to £800 a load to deliver cord!!!!!! And i also think VOSA would like a chat with you concerning rest time.

No he hasnt, there is no tampering but you are right that breaks should be respected.
